The Alethiometer from "Northern Lights"/"The Golden Compass" (His Dark Materials, Book 1) by Philip Pullman.

Modeled in Rhinoceros3D
Rendered using Flamingo

Update (2008.03.24):

I'm thinking of revisiting this model, improving it, and rerendering using better techniques. Stay tuned.

That's a good looking compass... must have taken forever to draw all those little pictures.
Only thing I don't like is the spotty metal material... but maybe I'd understand it better if I read the book =)

I stole the symbols from a drawing of it...

The compass itself is gold, but when I rendered it when it was smooth, it didn't look to good, so I used a hammered gold effect. It's not perfect, but it's better than the first.

In the thumbnail the textures look good... I guess it's just the big resolution that was bothering me...
